Life Ring
Artifact # 48309

This artifact was recovered from the Douglas beach wreck site by Captain John Brandon and the crew of the MV Endeavor. Stylistically this ring is similar to other found throughout the years on the 1715 wreck sites.

Grouped together under the heading Life rings, these rings often show various scenes from life. Some have included hunting scenes with dogs and game animals featured. In this instance the ring shows a simple floret on five of the seven circular panels that comprise the ring (see figure 22).

On the other two panels we see two Birds facing each other, although it is impossible to ascribe genus specie to the fowl depicted, one might conjecture that they represent fighting cocks. The practice of raising and fighting these birds is an ancient custom.

Other types of rings recovered from the 1715 fleet were reviewed in general in the 1999Florida East Coast Shipwreck Project Report, pages 216-226. In particular see page 225 figures 68 and 69 of artifact # 46224 which shows a ring of very similar style.
