Summary of Daily Activities: Note all activities conducted that day:

Excavation (Prop Wash Deflection) Air lifting/Injection Dredging

Magnetometer and/or Side-scan Survey (Remote Sensing Survey)

Visual Survey (Roaming, Metal Detector Survey)

    Circle Search Survey

    In/Out

    • DO NOT EXCAVATE ON ANY SHIP STRUCTURE. IF YOU UNCOVER STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS, NOTIFY THE OFFICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT THEY CAN BE DOCUMENTED.

Weather and Sea State: Note wind direction and knots, followed by wave height listed in feet. If conditions change later in the day, make notes in the Bottom Terrain column of the Lower Section.

    Captain: Captain of the vessel.

Crew: List all those people who are a part of the crew. Data recorder should be listed here, even though there is a space for his/her name by Data Recorder. You may have more than one data recorder during the course of the day.

    • NOTE: If at any time during the season there is a change of crew, the office should be notified immediately and proper identification provided. You may fax a copy of crew identification (Driver’s License and Social Security number) to 561-589-0997.

Data Recorder(s): List the person or persons designated as the data recorder for the day. Anyone whose name appears here should have read this entire set of guidelines.

Visitors: List anyone who was aboard the vessel who was a guest.

Differential Beacon: The differential beacon you are using.

Metal Detector Type: List only detectors and magnetometers used for that day.

Work Time _____ Hrs: Note here the time you leave the dock and the time you return at the end of the day. This allows the office to determine if a vessel has worked a full or a half-day for year-end reports.

Comments: Use as a daily log to list actual time on site, weather and sea changes, etc.

Magging: If you perform mag work, a separate report in addition to your regular daily logsheet, should be turned in that reflects the DGPS coordinates at the beginning of run, DGPS heading of the run, any anomalies, and the DGPS coordinates of the end of run. Include depth of water, compass heading and any other information you feel is pertinent. Number your anomalies consecutively throughout the year. If you investigate any anomalies, note the results on your regular daily logsheet. (See attached sample Logsheet for magging on page 11)

Hole #: Each morning do a test reading at the dock to ensure that your DGPS equipment is working correctly and record it as a test reading on your log sheet. Each hole excavated using prop wash deflection ("mailbox") and/or each survey unit where an Artifact is found is listed in consecutive order starting with #1. Please use column labeled "Hole #" for this information. You should have only one set of consecutive numbers throughout the year no matter how many sites you work. E.g.: if you dig hole #1 through 15 on Corrigans and the next day you begin at Cabin, you will start with hole #16 on your Cabin logsheet. If you are using a digging device, a hole # and position should be recorded every time, whether or not you find an artifact. If your vessel is conducting Visual/Circle Search Surveys, without using any type of digging device, you should consider each search a hole only if you recover an Artifact. Take a reading at the center of each search circle where an Artifact(s) was recovered and number them consecutively. If you recover an Artifact while conducting any other type of survey, place a buoy on the location, relocate the vessel, take a reading on the location of that recovery and treat it as a hole.

Lat Decimal Lon Decimal: Record DGPS coordinates in degrees (°) minutes and decimal minutes(’.’). Always record Latitude first then Longitude. Record whole latitude degrees in column labeled Lat and record latitude minutes and decimal minutes in the next column labeled Decimal. Record whole longitude degrees in column labeled Lon and record longitude minutes and decimal minutes in next column labeled Decimal. Please check your DGPS to ensure it is in the o,’.’ mode (see example on pages 8 & 9) and using datum NAD83.

Bottom Terrain: Note the natural bottom and the stratigraphy during excavation for each hole or unit. If it is the same as the last hole, write "SAME". (Example: Sand or Mud (list depth) with Soft, Hard or Broken Coquina, rock outcrops, or Worm Rock.

Depth: Note the depth to natural bottom in the upper left.

Tag Number: An individual tag number should be assigned to each recovered Artifact. Common Artifacts of the same type of material and description found in the same hole or unit may be assigned the same tag number only if they are not unique or precious as per The Archaeological Guidelines, page 4, item 7.

    • TAG NUMBERS MUST BE USED IN CONSECUTIVE ORDER.

    • ATTACH TAGS TO ARTIFACTS WITH PLASTIC TIE WRAPS, HEAVY TEST FISHING LINE, OR SOME OTHER NON DEGRADABLE HEAVY DUTY LINE OR INCLUDE THE TAG AND ARTIFACTS IN A FREEZER QUALITY ZIP-LOCK BAG. FOR LARGE ARTIFACTS, CONNECT TIE WRAPS OR USE NYLON CORD OR FISHING LINE.

    • DO NOT USE COTTON TWINE, WIRE, LIGHT TEST FISHING LINE OR WIRE TWIST-TIES.

If you run out of tags, use the letters of the alphabet temporarily and acquire new tags from the lab the following day. Use the newly assigned tag numbers to replace the letter tags.

Quantity: For individual Artifacts, note a quantity of ‘1’. For groups of common Artifacts or broken Artifacts, note the total quantity.

Description: First note the type of material and then a description of the Artifact. Note unique shape, relative size, condition, dimensions, traits or markings.

    • ARTIFACTS LOCATED BUT NOT RECOVERED, INCLUDING CANNONS AND ANCHORS, SHOULD BE TAGGED AND A NOTE OF ‘LEFT IN SITU’ PUT IN THE DESCRIPTION COLUMN.

    • ANY TIME YOU SEE BALLAST, NOTE IT IN THE DESCRIPTION COLUMN, NOTING THE SIZE (SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE), AND ANY AMOUNT (FEW, ALOT), AND NOTE THAT IT WAS LEFT BEHIND "IN SITU". IF YOU ARE UNCERTAIN IF WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN IS BALLAST, RECOVER A SAMPLE AND BRING TO THE LAB FOR IDENTIFICATION.
    • CANNON/ANCHOR WORKSHEETS MUST BE FILLED OUT WHENEVER AN UNTAGGED CANNON OR ANCHOR IS FOUND.

    • IF NOTHING IS LOCATED OR RECOVERED FROM THE HOLE, NOTE ‘NOTHING FOUND’ OR ‘NF’ IN THE DESCRIPTION COLUMN. PLEASE DO NOT RECOVER STRUCTURAL WOOD. ONLY WOOD THAT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF AN ARTIFACT SHOULD BE RECOVERED AND TURNED IN.

    • MODERN JUNK SHOULD BE RECOVERED AND DISPOSED OF PROPERLY. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE IT ON THE OCEAN FLOOR TO BE TARGETED AGAIN BY ANOTHER SUBCONTRACTOR.

    • FEEL FREE TO SKETCH ARTIFACTS ANYWHERE ON LOGSHEET.

    STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR SUBCONTRACTORS

    • READ AND APPLY TO ALL ACTIVITY ON ALL SITES THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL GUIDELINES FOR SALVAGING HISTORIC SHIPWRECK SITES AND THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL GUIDELINES FOR EXPLORATION CONTRACTS (THE LATTER APPLIES TO SITE E89).

    LOGSHEET AND ARTIFACT TURN-IN:

Each vessel regardless of contract number (C#) will be assigned a separate range of tag numbers. Please do not share tags. Each vessel is responsible for and must submit Artifacts and Logsheets for the entire season. Each vessel must account for all tags issued. Return any unused tags at the end of your season. DO NOT USE LAST YEARS TAGS.

    • KEEP ARTIFACTS STORED SECURE AND WET AT ALL TIMES UNTIL TURNED IN TO THE LAB.

Every two weeks, (once a week is preferred) turn in your Logsheets with all Artifacts recovered to the Conservation Lab at 1322 US #1 in Sebastian. If you have not been to sea or have not recovered artifacts, you may mail your logsheets in rather than turning them in person.

The Lab hours are 9-5 Monday - Friday. If you must turn in Artifacts after hours (including week-ends), call and make arrangements with Noel Wells at (321) 757-5682 or call Taffi at (561) 388-3109. If you cannot make arrangements with Noel or Taffi, wait until you can. DO NOT leave anything with the guards, the gift shop or anyone else.

Turn in Artifacts and Logsheets to Taffi Fisher or Noel Wells only. If you have Logsheets but no Artifact recoveries, you may turn them in or mail them to the office and your pink copy will be mailed back to you.

The person checking-in your Artifacts will sign his/her initials outside the description column for each tag number listed. This will indicate that the total quantity listed for that tag number has been turned in to the Conservation Lab

The person checking-in your Artifacts and Logsheets will then sign his/her name and date on the bottom right corner and give you the pink copy as your receipt.

For your information: Artifacts will be stabilized in the Conservation Laboratory and Logsheets turned over to the Staff Archaeologist for Data entry. The Yellow copy is kept on file in the office. A photocopy of each logsheet is made for Lab use. We submit reports and white copies to the State of Florida on a monthly basis, so it is very important your logsheets are turned-in in a timely fashion by the end of each month.

    GENERAL:

Each vessel’s activity and documentation will be reviewed on a monthly basis. Your contract may be renewed based on your ability to maintain activity within the guidelines and due diligence, at Mel Fisher Center’s discretion.

Each subcontractor must make sure that the office has a CURRENT ADDRESS AND HOME TELEPHONE NUMBER to reach you. If your number or address changes, please call, fax, or write the office IMMEDIATELY.

We have an agreement with the State of Florida that we will not use mailboxes, deflectors, and dredges or disturb the timber/ structure area of the Green Cabin Wreck Site. Do not perform this type of activity within 100’ of the timber/structure area which is located at approximate bearings of latitude 270 45.436 by longitude 800 23.220.

Reminder: If you find timbers anywhere stop digging and notify us.
